How to Make a Dog Bed Even If You Barely Know How to Sew?

Not everyone has a sewing machine at home or the necessary sewing skills. However, you have been thinking about making a small cushion for your dog for a few days. To help you find an easy solution to your problem, here is a special no-sew DIY to please your dog with a designer and no-sew cushion.

What do you need?

  • 2 large, fluffy queen-sized pillows (same brand and model, unless you want a lopsided bed)
  • 2 yards of 60 inch thick washable fabric (I used cotton upholstery fabric)
  • A long ruler or tape measure (optional, but useful)
  • Straight pins
  • Hand sewing thread, thicker than sewing machine thread
  • a needle
  • scissors
  • Long zipper (the one I used was about 40 inches)
  • Seam Ripper (optional)

Choose your fabric.

When choosing a fabric to make a dog bed , it is important to consider several factors. Here are some options for fabrics suitable for a dog bed:

1️⃣ Thick cotton canvas:

Cotton canvas is a good choice because it is durable, easy to work with, and breathable. It will also resist dog claws and bites.

2️⃣ Denim:

Denim is a sturdy fabric that can hold up well to regular use. It is also machine washable, making it easy to care for.

3️⃣ Upholstery fabric:

Upholstery fabrics are often thicker and more durable, making them suitable for a dog bed. Look for fabrics that are stain and claw resistant.

4️⃣ Waterproof fabric:

If you want a water-resistant or easy-to-clean cushion, you can opt for a waterproof fabric like nylon or coated polyester. Make sure the fabric is safe for dogs.

5️⃣ Polar:

Fleece is a soft and comfortable fabric, ideal for the inner lining of the cushion. It can be used in combination with a more robust fabric for the exterior.

Make sure to choose a fabric that is safe for your pet, that won't pose a choking or ingestion risk if they chew or tear the pad. Avoid fabrics that have small parts or detachable elements that could be accidentally swallowed.

Before you finally choose your fabric, also consider your dog's size and weight. Larger dogs will need a more robust and durable fabric, while smaller dogs may be more comfortable on a softer and more comfortable fabric.

Plan, measure and cut your fabric.

Here's how to plan, measure, and cut your fabric to make a dog bed:

1️⃣ Planning:
    • Determine the desired size of the cushion based on the size of your dog. Consider his size when he is lying down and add some space so he can curl up comfortably.
    • Also consider the thickness of the padding you will be using and factor this into your measurements.
    • Make sure you have enough fabric to cut two rectangular pieces of the desired size.
2️⃣ Measure:
    • Using a tape measure, measure the length and width to get the exact dimensions of the cushion you want.
    • Write down these measurements so you can use them when cutting the fabric.
3️⃣ Cut the fabric:
    • Place your fabric on a flat, smooth surface, then mark the dimensions of the cushion using a pencil or tailor's chalk.
    • Use a ruler or set square to get straight, precise lines.
    • Once the dimensions are marked, cut along the traced lines to obtain two pieces of fabric of the same size.

Make sure to cut precisely so that the two pieces of fabric match perfectly when they are put together. It may help to use pins to hold the fabrics together while cutting so that they do not move.

After cutting the fabric pieces, you can move on to the next step of assembling your dog bed .

Assembling your dog cushion

Here's how to assemble your dog bed :

1️⃣ Place the two pieces of fabric on top of each other, right sides together. Make sure the edges are aligned correctly.

2️⃣ Use a stapler or pins to secure the sides of the fabric together, leaving an opening of about 15 cm on one side. This will allow you to insert the pillow or stuffing later.

3️⃣ Once the sides are fixed, you can proceed to cut the corners of the fabric to facilitate the rounding. Use a pair of scissors to cut the corners of the fabric, taking care not to cut the seams.

4️⃣ Once the corners are cut, you can move on to the next step: inserting the pillow or stuffing through the opening left.

5️⃣ Take the pillow or stuffing and insert it inside the cushion through the opening. Make sure to distribute the stuffing well so that it is comfortable and even throughout the cushion.

6️⃣ Once the stuffing is inserted, fold the edges of the opening inwards. Use a stapler or pins to hold the edges closed.

7️⃣ You now have two options to permanently close the opening:

    • Use a needle and thread to hand stitch along the edges of the opening, making sure the stitches are strong and close together to secure the cushion.
    • Use fabric glue to close the opening. Apply a line of glue along the edges of the opening, then press the edges together and hold firmly until the glue dries.

Make sure the closure you choose is strong and secure, to prevent the filling from escaping. Once the opening is closed, you will have completed the assembly of your dog cushion . Your four-legged friend will now be able to enjoy his new comfortable cushion.
